28 Awesome Things You Probably Didn’t Know About “Pirates of the Caribbean”

1. In the audio commentary of “Curse of the Black Pearl”, Johnny Depp made a joke about Hector Barbossa.  Fans responded immediately, and the first name was added in subsequent movies.

2. The red sore on Jack’s jaw line is caused by syphilis.  (Note: Jack Sparrow has syphilis.  Johnny Depp does not.)

3. Johnny Depp based Jack Sparrow partially on Keith Richards, citing the rock star’s mannerisms and abundant hair accessories.

4. There was talk of Russell Brand playing Jack’s younger brother.  (When I say “there was” I mean me and some friends chatted about it once.)

5. Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner appear in the first three movies but not in the fourth.  This is because they are lame.

6. The man who gives the line “He’s disabled the rudder chain, sir” in “Curse of the Black Pearl” is the third hottest man in the film, beating out Orlando Bloom by a mere 0.3 hotness points.

7. Captains Teach and Teague share the first name of Edward.  Neither of them sparkle.  Ever.

8. In “On Stranger Tides”, Philip declares that the mermaid’s name is Syrena.  Sirena means mermaid in Spanish.  Clever, right?

9. The character of Blackbeard actually appears in Curse of the Black Pearl as one of Barbossa’s crew.  He’s the one Will Turner meets in the streets of Port Royal.

10. All of Jack’s costume pieces have a story.  Before “On Stranger Tides” was even written, Johnny said that the lace around his left wrist was given to Jack by “a Spanish widow he shagged once.”  That was convenient, eh?

11. The subtitle of Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is “Dead Men Tell No Tales.”

12. Each Pirate movie has a pirate theme song.  They are: A Pirate’s Life for Me, 15 Men on a Dead Man’s Chest, Never Shall We Die, Jolly Sailor Bold, and . . . . it will be something awesome, I’m sure.  You can see the clips here:
13. In On Stranger Tides we meet a character named Scrum.  Scrum is also a rugby term.

14. SPOILER ALERT!!  All the villains die.

15. Jack the Monkey is played by a girl monkey.

16. The costume designer, Penny Rose, took beautiful well-crafted costumes and put them in a cement mixer with bricks to give them an authentic worn-out look.  You should try this at home with your next pair of tattered hipster jeans.

17. “Dead Man’s Chest” is the highest grossing of all the Pirate films. This says more about its predecessor’s success than its own.

18. The Pirates of the Caribbean rides in Disneyland and Disneyworld have been adjusted to include main characters from the films.  Johnny Depp finds his animatronic counterpart freaky and unnerving.

19. In the fall of 2015 when previews for Dead Men Tell No Tales are released, people will excitedly inform me that there’s another Pirates movie coming.  It’s really cute how they all think I haven’t known about this for years.

20. Megan Fox was considered for the role of Syrena in On Stranger Tides.  Thank goodness they came to their senses before it was too late.  Here's a picture of Megan in a mermaid dress instead.

21. The ship captained by Geoffrey Rush in “On Stranger Tides” was also captained by Russell Crowe in “Master and Commander.”

22. The Pirates franchise includes two interspecies relationships: Davey Jones and Tia Dalma, and Philip and Syrena.  Actually, three if you include Jack sidling up to a goat in At World’s End.

23. The kissing scene between Jack and Elizabeth in Dead Man’s Chest was Keira Knightly’s idea.  Smooth, Keira.  Very subtle.

24. Tim Burton helped design some of the crew of the Flying Dutchman in Dead Man’s Chest.  True story.

25. Barbossa likes green apples.  There is no solid evidence to support that Geoffrey Rush is particularly fond of the fruit.

26. “At World’s End” is the most expensive movie ever made, not adjusted for inflation.  It cost as much as all three “Lord of the Rings” movies combined.  Was it worth it, Disney? Was it?

27. In “At World’s End” Barbossa is often seen wearing an Eagle Scout ring.  Hey, there’s not a lot to do in Davey Jones’ locker.

28. When Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is released (estimated 2018) Johnny Depp will be 55, and Geoffrey Rush will be 67.
